“Awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something vast and mysterious that transcends your current frame of reference that requires that you seek integration and meaning.” Dacher Keltner
- The beauty and complexity of the ocean can inspire us to take action to reduce carbon emissions, conserve water, and reduce plastic pollution.
- Awe and appreciation of the ocean can help us to better understand the impact of our lifestyle choices on the planet. By being aware of and understanding the important role the ocean plays in our lives, we can make more responsible choices to protect the marine environment. We can choose to reduce single-use plastic consumption, sustainable seafood, and conserving energy.
- Awe of the vast majestic ocean can help us recognize our collective responsibility to protect our ocean planet and make decisions that will ensure a healthy planet.
The emotion of awe helps us to be in the present moment, see the common good in others, and reduces stress. Awe is everywhere at the beach and in the ocean from the vast natural beauty, to the sounds of waves, the smell and taste of salt water, the buoyant feel of the ocean and a walk along the seashore.
If you can’t spend time at or in the ocean look at ocean or marine mammal photos or books, think of past fun ocean or beach experiences, or watch an ocean nature video to elicit awe. Remember moments of awe are great for your health.
