- Ecological Role: Manta rays play a critical role in maintaining the health and diversity of marine ecosystems. They are filter feeders, which helps to regulate the population of small organisms, such as plankton and krill, that are essential for the survival of many other marine species.
- Indicator species: Monitoring the populations of manta rays and their habitats, scientists can gain insight into the state of the broader marine ecosystem and identify potential problems early on.
- Tourism: Manta rays can be a tourist attraction, which contributes financially to the local economy. Eco-tourism activities, such as snorkeling and scuba diving tours, provide opportunities for visitors to observe awe inspiring manta rays.
- Scientific research: Scientists are investigating manta ray behavior, migration patterns, and ecology, which can inform conservation efforts and help to protect the health of marine ecosystems.
As a keystone species protection of manta rays are essential to maintaining the health and biodiversity of the ocean. Unfortunately, manta rays are threatened due to pollution, overfishing, entanglement from discarded fishing gear, and habitat loss. Responsible eco-tourism as well as conservation efforts can protect manta rays and their marine habitats.
The marine mammal protection act requires we provide 50 yards of space for marine mammals as to not interfere with their behavior. It’s also important to provide space for our own safety.
